Reading is a complex “cognitive process” of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). Reading is a means of language acquisition, communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all languages, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. While readers fully well understand the benefits of reading for pleasure, very few are actually aware of the great benefits of reading books.

Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) is based on the premise that reading without understanding is not reading. So it requires thinking. DRTA aims to develop more complex levels of thinking processes and initiates reading with a specific purpose – to prove or disprove predictions. Steps in DRTA are:

  • Making predictions/hypothesis about the content, idea, and concepts from the title of the reading material.
  • Sectional reading or processing (Chunking) of the material.
  • Checking the reliability and similarity of the read content with the predictions supported by evidence from the text.
  • For better comprehension, to know what and why the text says: review vocabulary, understanding of the main idea, the syntax of the sentence, details/facts and sequence of the story, and make inferences about the characters’ attitudes, behaviors or circumstances in the story.
  • Make tangential and plausible predictions and expectations about what the next section will be about in the reading material. (Continuing the cycle.)

Readers may use context clues to identify the meaning of unknown words. Readers integrate the words they have read into their existing framework of knowledge or schema.

1-It Is Your Best Teacher:-

The importance of reading books  Includes a dictionary to your bedside table for words that you do not understand and Boom! Instant vocabulary builder! We all know how important it is to have a good vocabulary in our professional life. It is true since learning is a lifelong experience which is different for each one of us. It’s said, “Tell me what you are reading and I will tell you who you are”. Reading books broadens the horizons of how you see the world, molds your thoughts and shapes your personality. The more you read, the wiser you become.Have you ever experienced deja vu where something you read in a book is similar to the current situation in your life and you know exactly what to do? Reading books is like learning on your own schedule. Its lessons will strike in your life when the time is just right.

2- Expand Your Imagination Creativity-

People who read books often have better imagination as reading is just words on paper, understanding everything written is left to the reader’s discretion. This opens the mind’s eye and our imagination runs amuck with the vivid sceneries described on the pages of the book in our hands. Over time, reading improves this imagination and becomes as vivid as watching a movie, if not more. This is one of the benefits of reading fiction.Reading will train your focus and concentration (which is essential for an actor), it will help you reduce amounts of stress and have a better night’s sleep. Reading a lot will turn you into a better communicator which is a skill that every actor on a stage or a film set can use.

The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” ~ Dr. Seuss

3- Makes Your Better & Smarter-

As mentioned earlier, one of the reading books advantages is that it increases your knowledge. Thus, being more knowledgeable makes for better conversation. Also, having a better vocabulary and grammar means you sound more refined when you talk. It gives you the gift of the Gab so to speak. Which brings me to my next point.

How make you smarter?Being an avid book reader and having a wide choice of good reads, automatically introduced me to a number of topics like politics, science, astronomy and even astrology. Reading introduces you to all this, plus more, and given that writers do a lot of research while writing their books, even the advantages of books that are fictional will send you away with some amount of knowledge on the written topic.Yet I’ve been finding that I can remember stuff much easier when I’ve been reading consistently. Do I have any scientific data to match this up? Not really. But I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that reading has somehow given me memory mojo.

4-Increased vocabulary-

Better vocabulary can be a pleasurable and profitable investment of both your time and effort. At least fifteen minutes a day of concentrated study on a regular basis can bring about a rapid improvement in your vocabulary skills, which in turn can increase your ability to communicate by writing, conversing, or making speeches. Acquiring a large vocabulary can benefit you in school, at work, and socially. It will enable you to understand others’ ideas better and to have the satisfaction of getting your thoughts and ideas across more effectively.

Many people are surprised when they are told they have small vocabularies. “But I read all the time!” they protest. This shows that reading alone may not be enough to make you learn new words. When we read a novel, for instance, there is usually a strong urge to get on with the story and skip over unfamiliar or perhaps vaguely known words. But while it is obvious when a word is totally unknown to you, you have to be especially aware of words that seem familiar to you but whose precise meanings you may not really know.

People read for a variety of reasons: entertainment, knowledge, understanding. There’s no better way to gain a larger vocabulary than by reading novels of all types and genres. Your high school teachers might have considered the classics the only true literature with educational value, but there are plenty of modern tales that can help you pick up new words to fling around at cocktail parties.

5-Motivation-

Perhaps the most important factor in a successful vocabulary-building program is motivation. It will be very difficult for you to study words month after month without a strong feeling that it is worth doing, that a larger vocabulary will help you in school and on the job, and that it can well lead to a more exciting and fulfilling life. We certainly feel that this is true, for nothing we measure success in life more than vocabulary. Your time could not be better spent.

We know you can expand your vocabulary almost as fast as you wish. There are countless examples of people who have done so. Remember, you started out in life knowing no words, and now you know thousands. You can learn many more. Why not start today?

6-Improved Focus and Concentration-

When you read a book, all of your attention is focused on the story—the rest of the world just falls away, and you can immerse yourself in every fine detail you’re absorbing. Try reading for 15-20 minutes before work (i.e. on your morning commute, if you take public transit), and you’ll be surprised at how much more focused you are once you get to the office. In the same way that musicians influence one another, and painters use techniques established by previous masters, so do writers learn how to craft prose by reading the works of others.
